Pedro Carol Hernández was born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States in December 2001.  He came to the United States upon completing the course work for his Masters degree in Physical Education at the University of Matanzas, where he also worked as a teacher of athletics and Cuban music and dance.  Pedro's Bachelor’s degree was also in Athletics, with a specialization in Baseball, from the University of Matanzas, where he was considered the university's top softball player.  Pedro won several awards for directing and participating in music and dance groups as well as for his work with students during his time at the University of Matanzas.  Prior to his work at the university, he taught baseball to elementary school children ages four to five years in order to introduce them to the Cuban national sport.  After studying English when he first arrived in New York, Pedro tutored students in Spanish.  Since 2003, Pedro has been working at the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC) as a recreation assistant, working with children as young as five through adults.  He joined La Escuelita June of 2005.  His approach to education is that everyone can learn, and that learning should be both joyous and as efficient as possible.  Pedro agrees with the Cuban philosophy that everyone has the right to be educated and must then contribute to the education of others.
