Our Philosophy

At La Escuelita, we understand the importance of play. Play is the way children explore their world and develop their literacy, mathematical, problem-solving, and social skills. Our curriculum is driven by students’ interests and centered in child development.

Our highly trained teachers develop thematic units that are developmentally appropriate and of current interest to the students in the class. Activities in each subject area, including literacy, math, science, art, dramatic play, manipulatives, and music are integrated into these themes.

For example, a class studying buses may:

  • Read books about buses
  • Dictate or write stories about trips they have taken on a bus
  • Measure the length of a real bus
  • Figure out different ways to combine coins for a bus fare
  • Count the people as they board and disembark using a bus felt board
  • Plan bus routes using a map
  • Sing songs about buses
  • Make a collage with geometric shapes
  • Build MetroCard sculptures
  • Take a ride on a bus
  • Interview a bus driver
  • Dress up as bus drivers in dramatic play
  • Build roads, bridges, and ramps with blocks, and experiment with the vehicle's speed

In short, La Escuelita’s approach is child-led and play-based.

90:10 Model of Delivery

Our 90:10 model refers to the amount of instructional time spent in Spanish in our preschool classrooms. Our 2s program is conducted 100% in Spanish, while the 3s and 4s spend 90% of class time in Spanish and 10% in English, allowing children to acquire pre-academic and social skills in both languages.

Dual Language Benefits

Research shows that education primarily in Spanish does not undermine the development of English-language skills. It is a learning enhancer, not an inhibitor. The rich set of opportunities to acquire, learn, and develop Spanish language in preschool, however, does provide accelerated development of Spanish. Our 90:10 model has been consistently successful in fostering bilingualism in our students whether they live in homes where English, Spanish, or other languages are spoken.

Programs

La Escuelita is the leader in combining an excellent preschool education with bilingual instruction in Spanish and English. The school year runs from September through June. Students must be 2 years old by September 1st in order to attend La Escuelita.

Children in the 2 year old classes are taught primarily in Spanish, while children in the 3 and 4 year old classes are taught in Spanish and English with an emphasis on Spanish. This is a proven research-based approach which maximizes time spent in the non-community language (Spanish) while allowing some time for vocabulary building in English. All classes are led by highly trained native Spanish-speaking staff, with one Head Teacher and two Assistant Teachers per classroom.

After-School Classes

Our after-school classes provide school-aged children a chance to reinforce and practice Spanish while exploring various content areas. All students aged 4-8 years old with previous knowledge of Spanish are invited to participate. All classes are mixed age groups, giving the younger children an opportunity to learn from their peers while instilling confidence and leadership in the older students.
